FRAGMENTO
Sobre tu sepulcro
sólo a sombra plana aspiro
salado goteo de enredadera
oprime la tráquea, la golpea, la enmudece.
Portentosa apareces, recto muro,
y eterna condena para él augura;
cuervo que duplica su graznido.
Mayúsculo es hoy el paraíso de concreto
plantado con femenino teodolito.
Es el cactus impulso reprimido de la tierra
que por fin escupe rubescente bocanada;
brasa de la vista, combustión del cielo,
color viscoso del dentado horizonte
se desangra, se desgrana, se desgana,
rocosa cópula de medio continente.
Noticias vagas no habrán de despertarte,
ni el humo encapsulado entre las gotas.

◘ News of the World
(Letter to Sor Juana)
Over your grave,
I can only aspire to be a flat shadow.
Salty drip from an ivy,
it depresses the trachea, it beats it, it mutes it.
You appear marvelous, a straight wall,
then vanish abandoning your words by themselves.
Your crown, you will have received a thousand times
from the pen dampened by the light, the same one.
Ignorance against genius
unfolds impatiently,
a fan made out of contradictions.
He casts a spell for his own stubborness on you
And thus an eternal sentence he augurs for himself;
crow who duplicates its caw.
Huge is the paradise of concrete
Planted with a feminine teodolite.
The cactus is the repressed impulse of the earth
which finally spits a rubescent puff;
hot coal of the sight, combustion of the sky,
viscous color of the jagged horizon,
it bleeds, it threshes itself, it ehausts itself,
rocky copulation of mid continent.
Quiet news will not awaken you,
nor will the smoke encapsulated in the drops.

♣ ELEFANTE AL CEMENTERIO
No es por todos los eternos años
No por ese trasero matapasiones
No por esas orejas de caricatura
Que el mago Disney las hizo volar
No por esas patotas dignas
De un pisapapeles ecológico
No por esa trompa fantástica
Propia de tantas voluptuosidades
Manguera multiusos y apagafuegos
No por ser estrella de Hollywood
En tantas películas para héroes y bufones
No por la amistad con Tarzán
O con Aníbal el Cartaginés
O la enemistad con Alejandro
Y el reventón con los ecologistas
Ni por tener ese perfil divino
Que Krishna modeló
Ni por esos colmillos de marfil
Trofeos de cazadores furtivos
Y adornos de antros negros y rojos
Ni por el uso de maquinaria pesada
Para hacer el amor
Por la misma existencia, caballeros
Por la hastiada y trivial existencia
Cautiva en ese tonelaje
Arrugado e impasible, tan noble
Que vive y muere tan dignamente.
◘ ELEPHANT TO THE CEMETERY
It is not because of all the eternal years
Not for that passion-killing butt
Not for those caricature ears
Which Disney the magician made fly
Not for those huge legs worthy
Of an echological paper weight
Not for that fantastic trunk
Proper of so many voluptuosities
Multiple-use hose and fire extinguisher
Not for being a Hollywood star
In so many movies for heroes and buffoons
Not for the friendship with Tarzan
Or with Anibal the Carthaginian
Or the enmity with Alexander
And the parties with the environmentalists
Nor for having that divine profile
That Krishna modeled
Nor for those ivory tusks
Furtive hunters’ trophies
And ornaments of black and red iniquitiy dens
Nor for the use of heavy machinery
To make love
But for the very existence, gentlemen
For the tired and trivial existence
Captive within that tonnage
Wrinkled and impassive, so noble
Who lives and dies in such dignified manner
♣ LA DAMA DE LA X- TRAIL
No puedo ocultar mi loco deseo:
Ningún perfil se compara
Oh poderosa enemiga mía
Mi destino a verte me conduce
◘ THE LADY OF THE X-TRAIL
I cannot hide my crazy desire:
No profile compares
Oh powerful enemy of mine
My destiny to see you drives me
From this sidewalk I indulge myself:
My eyes just see glow
The moonshine is no rival
I am a sad animal of creation
Long martirdom is the red light:
My eyes have lost peace
From my soul comes out my heart
Your life is more important, madam:
But throwing myself under your tires
Is an impulse that I lack.
(Go ahead, alright, step on the gas,
Explode the asphalt:
Revoke this way your indiference).
♣ ALWAYS ON MY MIND
Desprenderse de la nostalgia
Desprenderse de la memoria
Desprenderse de lo que se ha amado
Dice el poeta, es imposible
Esto satura los oídos
La piel se pone grifa
El corazón da tumbos
La garganta se infecta
Los ojos son vil lodo
La memoria y el olvido,
Piedras musgosas y picudas
Cargadas por oscuras manos
Arrojadas a la cara de nadie.
◘ ALWAYS ON MY MIND
Getting rid of nostalgia
Getting rid of memory
Getting rid of what has been loved
Says the poet, is impossible
This saturates your ears
The skin gets goose bumps
The heart trips
The throat gets infected
The eyes are mean mud
Memory and oblivion,
Mossy and pointy rocks
Carried by dark hands
Thrown at the face of no one

LIBRADO BASILIO
♣ Jaikús
El volcán
Por rezo matutino
prende la tierra
un cirio.
El viento
Con hoja perfumada
multiplica frío beso
ágil daga.
La lluvia
Al gráfico del rayo
la lluvia imprime
papel cuadriculado.
◘ Haikus
Volcano
As a morning prayer
Our planet is lighting up
A blessed candle
The Wind
An agile dagger
By means of a scented leaf
Multiplies cold kiss
Rain
To the lightning line
The rain happens to print
On some graph paper
A Cloud
On torquoise velvet
Cotton is fading away
The mending it’s done
The sun
Enormous daisy
Showers all over the earth
With its own pollen
◘ These poems were published in a magazine, El Caracol Marino, in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico, in 1955. Librado Basilio was a professor at Universidad Veracruzana, and a tranlator of Italian.
TRANSLATOR'S NOTE: In English, haikus are said to be formed by three verses of 5 syllables, 7, and 5, respectively. I have adapted Basilio's language to this metric.
