¡majestuoso! Respiré hondo. Me sentía extasiada. ¡pude sentir a Dios! Verdaderamente... No sé cuánto tiempo pasó.

They say that in life we must have our own monuments; that is, a place which you give a special meaning to; a special one due to the emotional content it implies. It can be a restaurant, a park, a beach, who knows! It can be so many different places! One of my favorite monuments is the Popocatepetl volcano, which sometimes we visited every two weeks; maybe I was 14 or 16 years old; I went with my mom, dad and brothers.
The day started from having breakfast in Amecameca, gorditas, quesadillas, tlacoyos, tamales, atole (sweet , hot porridge), etc. But that smell of charcoal in the rustic stove was hmmm… special! Then we arrived at Tlamacas (the mountain shelter at the foot of the Popo); we were all happy. We hiked wearing heavy clothes since it was very cold. But nothing stopped us, because as soon as we arrived at the snow, we took out big sacks which were part of our baggage and down we went on them sliding on the snow! How wonderful it was to slide over and over again! Then when we went back down, we stopped to eat something and bought oranges in Amecameca (I have always thought this word is funny). We bought so many oranges, the trunk of the car got full! We had oranges for the whole week. How delicious!
Today I see Don Goyo so alive, so mine, and inevitably my heart fills with all those beautiful moments. And I thank my father who did everything possible to teach me how to live and enjoy. From him (rest in peace) I learned a phrase which I keep with me every day: LET’S LIVE WHILE WE'RE LIVING! My father was a wise man.
How fun that we are that generation which was able to enjoy that Mexico of peace, smells, tradition, of heat from rustic stoves in homes, of men and women who took care and loved their land. My older brother and I liked mountaineering; my dad bought us some climbing gear, like ropes, crampons, boots, ice axes, gloves. We liked going on outings and hike, smell and touch the flowers, get our hands and feet in some river waters, watch the strange insects we found, the butterflies, hear the song birds, so much life! When we walked and someone in the group separated ahead, we would shout, “Baby, baby canadaaaa! Hahaha. I don’t know which one of us came out with such shout, but we knew it was a signal to know where everybody else was, so that we could find one another. How creative!
We loved to go to Tres Peñas, in front of the Desierto de los Leones National Park; there were rocks which were good for climbing where I learned to control the fear to rapelling; giving that small step down the cliff just holding a rope which crosses your legs is an incomparable moment, but it teaches you and shapes your character. It makes you a fighter, a warrior, and at the same time, sensitive while connecting you with your surroundings, because from the top of the rock I loved to see the river, listen to its music, the silent, still, railroad, the clouds, the mountains far away, and right there, near me, my dad telling me, “Don’t be afraid, you can do it, jump!” Pure adrenaline!
My brother bought a book (there was no internet.. ha!) to study the routes to climb to the crater of the Popo. We got our gear ready, and off we went! That day, my mom and my two younger brothers stayed in Tlamacas, at the skirts of Don Goyo. My dad, my brother, and I started to walk toward the top. I learned not to look at the distance yet to be covered, but to enjoy every step it took, one step… breathe in, another step, exhale, and so on; we finally arrived at the last mountain shelter. Near the crater, it starts to smell like sulfur (like rotten egg) but you have to get used to it… bad smell! My dad says, “Chelly, I will go with your brother, we just have two pairs of crampons”, (those spikes you fix to your boot soles to have perfect grasp in the snow, which at that height is already ice) “you wait for us here, don’t try to go up or go down, I will come back and you will come up to the crater with me.”
I saw them go away at a slow pace at that height (almost 17,716 ft). I stayed… alone, contemplating the clouds underneath; at the distance it looked like a floor of cotton covering my whole landscape; farther off, the Iztaccihuatl… majestic! I took a deep breath. I felt ecstatic. I remember I had the sensation of being an Eagle and I opened my arms and I imagined I flew over all that beauty that surrounded me, and… I could feel God! I truly was... in communion with Him. There, at that instant, I met him and I cried with happiness. I sighed thankfully! I don’t know how long that was. When my dad and my brother came back, so happy to have been at the crater, my dad said, “Chely, it was very heavy for me, I am tired and I won’t be able to go with up with you, we will do it some other time.” I said, “Dad, don’t worry! Being here was like getting all the way to the top, being here is what I needed"! So we went back down quietly… each one with his and her own experience of what we had just lived. I remember that before starting the descent, I shouted with all my strength: BABY BABY CANADAAAAAA!!!
It is a challenge to write this without getting emotional with the memory; I feel full of nostalgia for the times that were and will never come back.
Today, my Life Monument, is warmly saying hello from Amecameca (as you must already know). Don Goyo says hello to everyone, all of Mexico. But his hello is specially for me. The Monumental Volcano expresses his feelings, he roars as if saying, “Here I am, taking care of my beloved, don’t you dare bother her because I’ll bellow. If you thought I was sleeping, it isn’t like that. I am alive and exhaling! If you ever knew me in peace, that’s because I acknowledge that some inhabitants in this valley, of which I am master, deserved to visit me, since their generation was born noble and pure. That is why I allowed the white snows to cover my top, the clouds as cotton to caress my skirts, and the feet and hands of noble beings, touch me. They climbed me, they climbed with peace, they reached their dreams with me! The fresh air is also a friend; inhale, fill your lungs, astound yourself! Because God is present here… going along with you in your journey."

At that instant, with loneliness for company, sometimes my friend, other times my enemy, and thinking that your eyes did not reach mine (although that was something I could not be completely sure of), I closed my eyes and yours were there, constant, contrasting with your inconsistency. Why was that happening to me? I wanted to know about the structure of time – it was now a need to know that you are not just a memory; because instances, although brief, stay put somewhere. Could it have been just my imagination, or did they actually have a life of their own? At that moment, I inevitably had to address those who had studied that. I already knew that great scientists affirm that Time-Space are joined together, that you do not know anything about one if you do not observe the other.
Then, I remembered you, or I remembered the instant that contained you, and where, already tired of dancing with silence as my partner, our hands talked and our mouths held each other. Those hands of yours, which I knew molded mine, talked in their own language, the one of sensations, dancing with each other with movements of the most skilled dancers: an instant for an emotion, I don’t know if that was love, but in my heart there were constant shocks of some kind of energy; it was a memory, but not gone, it was still existing. What was the past then if not a gone away instant, lost in time which goes by? But no, it was not like that, because I felt it was part of an eternity formed by instants, of such furtive presents that in the moment we are aware of one, it gets lost in the past to make place for a new one. Then, would present be so important? Then love or any superior emotion in my conscience would have to have a direction different from that of time, because my heart would jump even without having you resting on it, because your eyes shined even without having you right in front of me. So an emotion is not found in the time that goes by, it has a different direction from that of time, instead, it must be found in a space. Again our instants came to me in the shape of memories, thinking about the day when tired already of the dance of my hands and the silence of our mouths, you decided to talk and ask, “Why do stars exist?” If I remember well, we were lying on the hood of the car in the middle of a forest looking at hundreds of stars, with the city lights down there, and the city dwellers there, who knew nothing about our love. And I answered with the clumsiness of one who is far from being a poet, I said, “I don’t know their end, how could I know if they are so great and we are so small? But, you know, we can admire them and that gives us a level of awareness, not like theirs, because in their eternal fight of opposed forces they are still there, majestic. See, a star fights like you or me to stay alive, it has an eternal force called fusion: that force affirms; and it has another one called gravity, which denies, and the equilibrium is created for a perfect sphere in eternity, which I suppose exists to be part of the universe and so that something like that will guarantee its eternal home. They are not useless as they look – I continued- in fact, your body, which I like so much, comes form there. One of them once exploded so that you would have material for your body to form; and I would not be surprised if your conscience had its origin there too, since you are like an angel”. At that point, you just looked at me and silenced me with a kiss, to tell me with your eyes to not go on, that even without poetry my bizarre explanation of science had been enough, but I went on – “listen, there’s something else I want you to see, instances do not go away, this present moment will be printed in the eternity of time, you know why? Because if someone were in a planet of the star closest to this place, our Earth, and had a powerful telescope to see us here on top of this car, he would not be seeing us because his vision would be what happened 4 years ago. The light takes time to travel, although at the fastest speed possible in space”, again you silenced me to tell me that you loved me, and looked into mine with your beautiful eyes. Suddenly, I found myself in the present again at once; I had a tear running down my cheek in loneliness, wishing that the instants in my past were not fleeting, that time that goes by would still be recorded in eternity for real, and I thought that, wishfully, there was someone in that close star looking at the forest where I loved you and would tell me that we were still there, that that moment had not disappeared, that you existed still, that you were not just the memory of my need, that you were still in existence and that you had never left; that you were not just one shooting instant. And that you, like the stars, would have fought to stay alive, although I know that you are part of an eternity, or of an eternal instant.
