♣ Más hispanos en universidades ◘ More Hispanics in College
¿Cómo? How come?
©2011 LatinoticiasMC, All rights reserved ©2011 María E. Cuthbert |
Not everything is bad news for the Hispanic population. I have always said that the majority of Hispanic mothers, especially those recently arrived, are very attentive in our children’s good manners, and in their being good individuals in general. For us, it is clear that we must take care of the environment, and go to school. And the “critical thinking” that school authorities are supposed to be trying to promote in schools, we have it intrinsecally rooted in us.
The Pew Hispanic Center, dedicated to study and get statistics of the tendencies of the Hispanic and Latino population – with older roots in these lands – has analyzed the data collected by the 2010 census and has arrived at the conclusion that about 349,000 more Hispanics attended a college or university in 2010 than before. About a third part of young Hispanics between 18 and 24 years, i.e., 32%, attend a college, although most of them are not enrolled in 4-year-studies schools. This tendency was clear before, since by 2009, the number of these students had already grown to 27%, compared to 13% in 1972. Hopefully, these figures are indeed close to reality. The Pew Hispanic Center believes, without a strong support to its argument, that the reason for this growth is for sure an increase in immigration, apart of the higher level of fertility among the Hispanic population. Other observers gave the triumph to the programs fighting against Hispanic dropout rates between 6th and 8th grades, or middle school, and 9th and 12th, or high school. Schools have complained enough about the results of these students; while for students themselves, it is a hard deal to prove to the world that they are not less, nor know less, than other students. We are not perfect, that is true. One side or another give the credit for the achievement to anything but Hispanics. Nevertheless, for us, Hispanics, it is clear that those who know 100% of a tongue and 100% of another one too, know in reality 200% of language. The reasons for this unexpected growth in the student population are clear for us, who are more based on observation and the knowledge of our culture. First, it is due to the mothers, the families, of course. It is my belief that another strong reason for this growth in the student population is that a president of black race was elected. This made us all see a real possibility for progress for those who are in disadvantage for cultural reasons, not even of color or language. Yes we can, we said, and the students are doing it. Good luck to all Hispanic students! |
